Portož Rose

Portorož (Portorose) translates as "Port of Roses," but the town didn't actually get its name from flowers or roses. The name came from a former small church called Sancta Maria Roxe or Santa Maria delle Rose (St. Mary of the Rosary), which once stood by the sea near Bernardin ant the bay of Portorož was in fact named Portus sanctae Mariae de Rosa (1251) after this church. By the end of the 18th century, the church was abandoned, and in the 19th century, the area was named Porto rose. It was not until the late 19th century, with the beginning of rapid tourism development, that the name started being written as one word. Initially, this name was only used for the part of the bay near Bernardin (Fizine), but it then expanded to include the entire place. Despite this, the rose eventually became a symbol of the Portorož and has appeared in various forms.

Today, the Portorož Rose (KO 00-0939-10) is an upright-growing floribunda or multi-flowered rose with blooms in clusters. It reaches a height of about 60-80 cm. It is healthy with notably beautiful dark green foliage. It is suitable for planting in groups for full blooming or as a standalone shrub. Its semi-double flowers are bright orange, gradually changing color to yellow and then pale pink as they bloom.

The breeder of the Portorož Rose is Mr. Thomas Proll from the German company Kordes, one of the largest and most well-known European companies in this field. Every year they conduct about 400,000 experiments, from which only six or seven new varieties of roses suitable for planting are developed.

The rose was officially registered in 2012, thereby protecting the name Portorož in the plant registry.
