The original group Salamander was founded in the mid-1970s by poet and musician Tomaž Pengov and poet, writer, and musician Milan Dekleva. The group, which had around ten members either permanently or occasionally, played mostly music set to Tomaž Pengov's poetry at various concerts. Some view them, alongside the band Saeta, as pioneers of improvised music in Slovenia.
In January 2019, Salamander was revived by five members of the original lineup, each with a rich history of activity both at home and abroad.
The band performs compositions where the poetry of Milan Dekleva and the music he composed intertwine with group and individual instrumental excursions, arranged by Jerko Novak. They enhance lyrical, chanson-like softness with jazz-influenced, harmonically varied progressions. However, they do not succumb to the imperatives of contemporary instrumentalist exhibitionism, opting instead for a calm and technically refined performance of composed pieces and colorful group and solo improvisations.
